The 740-page draft committee report has been prepared by a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. It was handed over to CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday. The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill aims to bring uniformity in civil laws. That means having uniform laws for every citizen.

Under the Uniform Civil Code, the same law will apply to all religions in matters of marriage, divorce and division of property. This law is related to social matters. It applies equally to people of all religions in matters like marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance and child adoption etc. On Sunday, the Uttarakhand Cabinet led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has given its approval to the UCC Bill. According to sources, there are some important features of the UCC bill.

These special proposals got approval

Ban on polygamy and child marriage: The Committee proposes a comprehensive ban on polygamy and child marriage to ensure uniformity in personal laws. Common Marriageable Age: Advocates a uniform marriageable age for girls of all religions to establish equality and eliminate inequalities.

Uniform grounds and procedures for divorce:

The Committee suggests implementing uniform grounds and procedures for divorce, promoting standardized legal procedures.

According to media reports, couples whose marriages are not registered will not get any government facility and arrangements for marriage registration will be made at the village level. Muslim women will also have the right to adopt and its process will be simplified. He said the practices of Halala and ‘Iddat’ would be banned. It is being told that apart from this, it will be mandatory to give information about ‘live-in relationship’.
