Indian Railways has taken a big decision to prevent misuse of online ticket booking system. More than 2.5 crore user IDs of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have been deactivated. IDs have been deactivated after identifying suspicious booking patterns and fake users. The government has given this information in response to a question raised by MP A.D. Singh in Parliament.

Before these accounts were deactivated, there were many problems in Tatkal ticket booking. It was often seen that the tickets used to disappear within a few minutes of opening the Tatkal booking window, because the agents used to make all the tickets disappear using bots, due to which the common passenger was not able to book tickets. However, now after the change, railway passengers have got a big relief.

What information did the government give?

The government told in Parliament that to prevent irregularities in the ticket booking system, IRCTC has recently deactivated more than 2.5 crore user IDs. Because these user IDs were found suspicious. The government said that Indian Railways has made some more changes to promote confirmed ticket booking and digital.

Railways have changed these rules

  • Reserved tickets can be booked online or at computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters on a ‘first come first serve’ basis. However, about 89% of the total tickets are being booked through online mode.
  • Digital payment facility has been made available at PRS counters.
  • From July 1, 2025, tickets under the Tatkal scheme can be booked only by Aadhaar verified users through IRCTC website or app.
  • Agents have been barred from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of opening of Tatkal reserve.
  • The status of the waiting list of trains is monitored on a regular basis and to meet the additional demand, Indian Railways is running special trains.

Changes regarding emergency quota also

The government has also made changes regarding emergency quota. Earlier, application for booking tickets under emergency quota could be made on the day of travel, but now one has to apply for emergency quota 1 day in advance. This quota is for MPs, senior officials, medical emergencies and senior citizens.
