Income Tax Return 2025: The possibility of extending the deadline for filing income tax returns is being discussed. The government has fixed 15 September 2025 as the last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25. Some experts believe that further extension may be given due to technical reasons.
Income Tax Return Deadline: With the beginning of August, a big question has arisen for crores of taxpayers of the country whether the deadline for filing income tax return (ITR) can be extended this year as well? For the last few days, there has been a discussion from social media to all experts and tax consultants whether the government will extend the last date for filing ITR, or the extended deadline of 15 September 2025 will remain final.
What do experts say?
For the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26), the Income Tax Department has extended the last date for filing ITR from 31 July to 15 September 2025. The reason for this was said to be major changes in the ITR form, delay in updating the digital system and giving a better experience to the taxpayers. According to experts, this time the extension has been extraordinary, because the deadline was not extended for the last three years.
Some tax experts say that various technical changes and online-offline utility of some forms of ITR (such as Form 5, 6, 7) have not been released yet. In such a situation, it is very possible that further extension may be given to the taxpayers associated with these forms. At the same time, for most common taxpayers like salaried class or small businessmen, the last date of September 15 is currently valid. At the same time, when this question was asked to CA Dr. Suresh Surana, he said that the deadline for extending ITR may be extended, although no statement has come from the government on this yet.
What if the date is not extended?
- Late fees and interest will have to be paid on filing returns after September 15, 2025.
- You can file belated returns till December 31, 2025, but the exemption facilities on it are reduced.
- It is always right to file returns before the last date to avoid technical problems or errors in documentation.
