The central Narendra Modi government (PM Narendra Modi Govt) has given a big relief to the central employees and has extended the previously fixed deadline for choosing Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and National Pension Scheme (NPS) by three months. Let us tell you that to do this work, the government has now extended the new last date to 30 September 2025. The government has shared the information by issuing a press release in this regard.

The deadline was ending on June 30

According to the press release issued by the government on Monday, till now the last date of 30 June 2025 was fixed for the existing eligible central employees, retired employees and legally married spouses of deceased retired employees to choose UPS and NPS options under this scheme. After this, there were continuous requests to extend this deadline, keeping in mind which the government has extended the cut off date for central employees by three months to 30 September.

Employees will get more time for decision

With this decision of the central government, central employees will now get more time to choose an option in UPS-NPS and they will be able to take a decision on it after thinking. The application window for the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) was started by the government on 1 April 2025 this year and it was to close on 30 June 2025. Now it seems unlikely to be extended beyond 30 September. In such a situation, if a person does not apply under this scheme till the new deadline, then he may have to suffer loss, because any application made after this will not be accepted.

What are the benefits under this scheme?

It is worth noting that the UPS Scheme launched by the Central Government has been designed to provide financial benefits to such people who have served as a Central Government employee for at least 10 years. If we look at its benefits, then the benefit of lump sum pension will be given by calculating on the basis of six months’ average last salary and dearness allowance. Apart from this, monthly top-up is also offered. The most important thing is that in this pension scheme, the legal life partner of the deceased retired employees also gets benefits.

How can you apply?

Talking about the way to apply for this pension scheme, eligible applicants can apply for UPS benefits both offline and online. For online application, applicants get the facility to fill and submit their forms directly on its website. Whereas to apply offline, the eligible will have to download the form from the NPS website and submit it to the DDO.
