A railway worker tragically died, and three others were seriously injured in Bihar’s Katihar district when a railway trolley collided with the Avadh Assam Express. The accident took place on the Barauni–Katihar down line, prompting railway officials to dispatch a medical team to provide immediate assistance to the injured at the accident spot.
A railway worker was killed and four others seriously injured after an express train collided with a maintenance trolley in Bihar’s Katihar district on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 2.20pm near Maharani village, between Kadhagola and Semapur stations, on the Barauni-Katihar section of the East Central Railway.
The Dibrugarh-bound Avadh Assam Express (train number 15910), travelling from Lalgarh Junction in Rajasthan, struck the trolley from behind, officials said.
The victim, identified as Pramod Kumar, was a trolley man working on the tracks. He died from injuries sustained in the crash. Four others were taken to Katihar hospital and are said to be in stable condition.
Sonepur Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Bhushan Sood described the incident as “deeply saddening” and said a high-level inquiry was underway.
“We are in touch with the families of those affected and are extending every possible support,” he said.
Railway authorities have initiated funeral allowances and are processing ex gratia payments for the victim’s family and the injured.
Initial reports suggest the trolley may have been stationary or moving slowly when it was hit. Sources said it was likely being used for track maintenance or other safety-related tasks.
Senior railway officials are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby stations as part of the investigation, which will examine any lapses in safety or technical failures.
