The number of international flights will decrease
Air India said in a statement on Thursday that it will cut 38 international flights every week between June 21 and July 15 and suspend service on three foreign routes. The Tata Group-owned airline, which has been facing disruptions after the deadly plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, said the reduction in flights on 18 international routes is aimed at restoring schedule stability and reducing last-minute inconvenience to passengers.
Services suspended from June 21 to July 15
This detailed announcement has been made a day after the airline said that it would temporarily reduce flights operated by wide-body aircraft by 15 per cent. Air India said in a statement that these cuts will be effective from June 21, 2025 and will last at least till July 15, 2025. Services on Delhi Nairobi, Amritsar London (Gatwick) and Goa (Mopa)-London (Gatwick) will remain suspended till July 15.
Flights will be reduced on these routes
According to the airline, there are four flights every week on the Delhi-Nairobi route, while there are three flights every week on the Amritsar-London (Gatwick) and Goa (Mopa)-London (Gatwick) routes. Apart from this, flights will be reduced on 18 international routes connecting cities in North America, Europe, Australia and the Far East. The routes in North America on which flights will be reduced are Delhi-Toronto, Delhi-Vancouver, Delhi-San Francisco, Delhi-Chicago and Delhi-Washington.
Why are flights being reduced?
The statement said, “This reduction is due to the voluntary decision to enhance pre-flight security checks as well as the closure of airspace in the Middle East.” Earlier in the day, Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said in a message to passengers that the airline has decided to continue pre-flight security checks on its Boeing 787 fleet and Boeing 777 aircraft.
Wilson said that given the time required for these additional checks and the potential impact on schedules, Air India has decided to cut its international wide-body flights by about 15 per cent starting June 20 until at least mid-July. Routes in Europe on which flight services have been cut include Delhi-London Heathrow, Bengaluru-London Heathrow, Amritsar-Birmingham and Delhi-Birmingham, Delhi-Paris, Delhi-Milan, Delhi-Copenhagen, Delhi-Vienna and Delhi-Amsterdam.
